In the “Marketing” category here I will try to expose some less conventional ideas for advertising, be it your blog, your site, your business, etc. I really am trying to look into how to advertise for cheap first of all (if you’re like me, you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars), but cheap doesn’t mean less creative or less effective.
So, in a previous article I’ve talked about how Ad Cards can help you, and how to make them yourself, to keep expenses to a minimum. Now I want to focus on another way to advertise for (really) cheap in the real world: balloons.
Why balloons? Let’s see: online you can buy 144 balloons for $9. For about $170 you can custom print 1,000 balloons on one side. So, they’re cheap. A balloon hand pump is around $5, or they even have those machines that will air-inflate your balloons, for over $100.
So for about $20 , you can inflate over 150 balloons with a hand pump. Now you can either have them custom printed (which will be more expensive), or you can take a black marker and write your site’s address on. With some other coloured markers you can add flowers, hearts, etc.
Now let’s say you have a site about music, you can go to a music store and ask the owner if you can tie some advertising balloons at the door. You can convince the store to let you do that by telling them you’ll write a full, positive article about their business on your blog, advertising for them in return. It’s important in such case, I think, to have your own domain. I’m not saying that yous site is not great, but people in the real world will always see .com more professional and trustworthy.
Now you can inflate about 5-10 balloons, add some music notes with your markers, and a big, visible address for your site. You can allow the customers to take a balloon with them, but you will run out pretty soon. The best is to tie them somewhere at the entrance, and then, either next to them or somewhere visible in the store, put an ad page cut at the bottom with your URL on each small piece, for people to take with them.
You can use about 5 balloons per location, and try different ones and see where it works best.
Another thing you could do is just leave them in public places that are highly trafficked, liked parks, busy intersections, events, etc. Just tie them to a tree/lamp post, and maybe glue an ad paper next to them. Add a controversial question on each balloon, or a contest you’re running, or anything interesting. Each ballon can have a joke written on, for example, just to attract people’s attention to your URL or the ad post next to the balloon.
Did you know that the huge balloons you see floating around at sporting events are called blimps and are actually aircrafts kinda like Zeppelins? To advertise there is very expensive, but effective. (just thought I’d mention this)
Conclusion
With a bit of imagination you can surely come up with a plan to advertise you business/services/blog/site etc. in an original way, and for cheap.
Balloons are definitely popular, the bigger and the more colorful the better they say, but to keep it cheap you can always use regular balloons that can be effective too. Just try to diversify your advertising methods and see what works for you. Everybody loves balloons, and that’s exactly what you want, attention. It could become profitable if you sell something on your site too, your own product or an affiliate, and advertise that too on the balloons.
I hope you’ve enjoyed it. Please leave a comment or subscribe! What do you think about advertising on balloons? Would you do it? Do you think it works? Tell us about it!
