Green is a state of mind, green is the new black, green is in, green is the future, green is life and happiness, and now, for the big companies, green is money!
I’m not fooled for a second to believe the biggest companies in the world (that BTW never ever thought about the environment before) have suddenly understood green is the way to go and changed their way of thinking. If you’ve shamelessly polluted for decades, why care now all of a sudden? The answer is… what else? Money of course. At the end of the day, the big corporations can’t afford to lose ground, there’s a tough game to be played. You can’t compete if you don’t adapt to your circumstances, and they know that.
Since the trend has become more and more popular, we have embraced the concept of green. We became advocates for it. We, the bloggers. We, the journalists. We, the working people. But most importantly, we, the consumers, want to live green.
So, let’s cut to the chase, here are some companies that everybody knows and that are trying to go green:
Clorox bought Burt’s Bees, the green, organic company everybody loves, in an attempt to “greenwash” it’s image.
It launched a new brand of cleaners called Green Works - obviously not using bleach, but all natural ingredients, biodegradable in a recyclable package. Still, they contain ethanol and artificial coloring that can be dangerous for your health.
Clorox continues to sell highly toxic bleach by the ton, and still tests it’s products on animals, but wants to keep an appearance of “green” for us, the consumers. You can’t put a big sign saying GREEN on your door and show off 3 products in the window, while in the back you have a lab with tortured animals and trucks with tons of bleach!
Walmart donates to Universities to sponsor research about sustainable living.
It demands from it suppliers to go green as well, which I think is a great thing! From organizing contests, to asking them to reduce packaging material and to make their products eco friendly, it’s a great idea that’s already proving to be successful.
It’s also saving energy and pretty much working on every aspect that can be improved to reach the goal of being green.
Other companies that are trying green are: Procter & Gamble, Pepsico, Johnson & Johnson, British Airways, Wells Fargo, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and many, many more.
Conclusion
I really think this is not just a trend, but a way of thinking that is here to stay. We seem to have become more aware consumers. Instead of just buying without caring, we started to look at things we didn’t in the past: is this product green/organic, was this product tasted on animals, and so on.The beauty of capitalism! We can always replace a product with another!
I hope you’ve enjoyed it, please consider subscribing! What do you think about companies trying to go green? Would the fact that a company/product is green or not influence you? Do you look for organic/natural products when you shop?
