We all know content is king, nobody can argue with that. It’s been said over and over again. But the controversy is about the queen, every blogger has a different opinion about who it should be.
Some attribute the crown to: linking, style, keywords, interaction, relevance, even John Chow! (Sorry John, I found this on the net and couldn’t resist it).
I think marketing should be just as important as content, so my queen is marketing. I know, I’m kinda cheating , because marketing really encompasses a bit of everything, being the way you “sell” your blog to the world.
So marketing your blog could well mean these few things:
- getting links, as many as you can - advertise for your blog, put it out there, make others want to link to you and watch your rank go up in search engines;
- talking about advertising, that’s the key word here - either pay for advertising, or, more convenient, use free advertising, like Entrecard, forums, other blogs, etc. Make yourself a nice ad, use it for Entrecard, forums, or wherever you’re allowed to upload an avatar;
- you’ll have to market your blog through appearance as well - a nice looking blog, like everything in life, will attract more views. Keep it simple, but different. Don’t use the standard template you see on too many blogs. Warm colors, pastels, nothing flashy. Talking about flashy, don’t use flash!
- Customize as much as you can, brand your blog. Make a customized header. We all know (right?) the cow from John Cow - milking the Internet? It’s a unique design, it sticks with you. You can brand your blog through many different ways, like making a favicon (the little simbol that appears next to your URL in a browser), choosing some interesting widgets and plugins, having a unique logo, even using a certain sentence at the beginning of every post (Howdy pardner, how’ve you been? - just came to mind
). Anything to set you apart from everybody else. Remember, there are millions of blogs out there, and probably more than a few thousands with the same topic as yours. So even if you can’t avoid saying the same things as some of them, try to add something unique;
Finally, I would like you to remember something:
“Content is King” is an old saying already, but “Customer is King” is even older.
The visitors are your customers, and you have to keep them happy. They will understand and support you even if your content sucks sometimes (right?)
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, feel free to leave me a comment!

If Content Is King - Who’s The Queen?…
It’s a cliche: “Content Is King”. But every blogger has a different idea about who the queen should be……
Good writing. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed my Google News Reader..

Matt, thank you so much, I really appreciate your support!
Great post !! I suppose queen has to be promotion of our sites.
Thanks Danny. Nice to see you back!
Yeah, promotion is second after content, I think, it’s not enough to have an interesting blog if nobody will read it, right?
Wow. This post is brilliant.
It’s simple, short, and to the point…the best kind of post!
This one got me thinking…what is the “queen?”
I think a case could be made for “readability” to be the queen. My reasoning is that most people won’t read a blog that is garbage, even if the content is good. If you don’t have at least a decent design and functionality, then people will leave never to return. Kind of the idea of making a great first impression in networking.
Marketing is great…but to make an analogy to dating…”you can look great but if there’s no substance…CYA”
Keep up the great posts!
Brad, thanks for stopping by.
You’re right, the image of the blog is very important, that first impression is everything, and if you’re site screams “I don’t care about you, I’m unprofessional”, you can have the best articles in the world. Nobody will read them.
